Crutch

Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

From Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, Elisha A. Hoffman and Anthony J. Showalter, 1887. Public domain.

Some people call God a crutch. They think that only the weak need God. Only the unintelligent rely on a God that they can’t see or touch.

Is a crutch a bad thing? Your leg is broken and you can’t walk. What do you do? You get a set of crutches so that you can get around. The crutches are your source of stability and mobility. I think it would be silly for me to sit at home with my broken leg and not avail of that set of crutches… I am better off with the crutches!

I guess what I’m getting at is that, in myself, I am weak. I will admit that. I am broken. I am flawed. I am sinful. I am fearful. The list goes on.

I will state it boldly that I need God! I can’t make it without Him. I don’t want to live life without Him. So if you think I’m weak because of that, so be it. I need this crutch. I need Him to walk with me through this journey called life. (Sometimes, I need Him to carry me!) I need His support. I need the strength He provides.

There’s an old chorus called I Don’t Know What I Would Do Without the Lord. And frankly, that’s exactly how I feel!

God bless you today.

Reflection

Where do you need God’s strength today? What would it look like to depend on Him in that part of your life?

Prayer

Lord, I need You. Thank You that I can come to You with my weakness and my fears. Help me to rely on Your strength and receive Your support. Walk with me through each step, and carry me when I cannot carry on alone. Amen.

Your next step.
